The United States Green Building Council www.usgbc.org
The United States Green Building Council is the preeminent organization in the United States to create a consensus among government, building owners, developers and architects to promote the use of sustainable building design through the use of design practices and manufacturing guidelines. This organization is the driving force to develop the LEED rating system to ascertain whether a structure has met the criteria to designate it as 'green-friendly'. The masonry industry is committed to developing good business practice to be a beneficial building product that will be a factor in meeting future LEED designation as a certified renewable resource.

Belden Brick Sales and Service believes that as part of our overall business criteria, we place a very high emphasis on providing a product line-up that does no harm to the public. As an end-result of this ethos, we make a point of representing brick manufacturers who believe that the simple brick is a perfect building material to meet the term renewable resource. All of our manufacturers believe, in one form or another, in developing a 'green' business plan. One of our manufacturers works in partnership with a major alkaline battery manufacturer to recycle a nuiscience battery chemical by-product to assist in the firing of their clay bricks. Yet another of our manufacturers believes in a zero waste philosophy by bringing exhausted strip mines back to a natural state of parkland and farmland. In every case, this is not simple 'tree hugging, but very good business.

And it is good business because many municipalities and states are now mandating the use of 'green building' principals as outlined in the LEED rating system (click here to link to more detailed information, www.usgbc.org). Belden Brick Sales and Service is at the very forefront of that movement by being the first-ever clay/shale fired masonry manufacturer or supplier to gain acceptance for membership in the prestigious United States Green Building Council. As a member of this organization, we bring more awareness of the simple unassuming brick as being perhaps the most green of all building supplies. A brick structure contributes to gaining valuable points towards achieving 'green' status and is entirely environmentally safe and renewable as well as energy efficient.
