The Kalahari : LEED rated project in Harlem, NY
Belden Brick Sales and Service has recently completed involvement with the first LEED rated project located in Harlem, New York City. This significant project is a mixed-use residential condominium called The Kalahari. The project celebrates the multi-cultural neighborhood in which it is located by creating a one-of-a-kind pattern of brickwork that evokes African graphics and textures.
The design architectural firm, Fredrick Schwartz, located in New York City, collaborated with Belden Brick Sales and Service to translate intricate basket-weave patterns created by the firms design team by specifying a custom blend of four different brick selected from two of our represented companies, The Belden Brick Company and Pacific Clay Products.
The highly stylized brick pattern was accomplished by plotting out every brick so that the masons and labors working on the project would have a clear indication of where each brick needed to be placed. The fronting facades of both wings highlight this extraordinary blend of brick colors in a dramatic stepped pattern.
The project was recently awarded the Excellence Award for Green Building Design by Multi-Housing News.
